VIVA is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system operation in the Region of York, Ontario. The service is a division of York Region Transit and is operated by York BRT Services LP a division of Veolia Transportation.

VIVA Stops, known as VIVA Statins are spaced a minimum of 750 metres apart. Customers are required to buy and validate their fare before boarding.

History

VIVA was designed and built as a Public-Private Partnership ("PPP"). The Region of York partnered with York Consortium, which comprises seven private sector firms with extensive international experience in transit design, architecture, construction and operations.

The agreement that was made between the public and private partners was that the Region of York established the fare policies and service requirements, owned the assets of the operations as well as the control of funds and revenue. The private partners hire the workers and assist the public partners with the funding and financing.

VIVA was opened up in 5 stages;

  • Stage 1 opened up on September 6th, 2005
  • Stage 2 opened up on October 16th, 2005
  • Stage 3 opened up on November 20th, 2005
  • Stage 4 opened up on January 2nd, 2006
